Project Outreach Annual Pie Baking

Every year students from Project Outreach and culinary classes at Norwich Free Academy team up to bake pies for the soup kitchen in Norwich.

Jodi Savage, Project Outreach director, helps create and organize volunteering opportunities for students to help people who are not as fortunate in our community. The annual pie baking event for Thanksgiving is just one of the many opportunities students participate in.  

“It’s something I did when I was in high school here. We always made the pies. This is carrying on a tradition with new students and being able to give that opportunity to more students is very special to me,” said Savage. 

Students and teachers baked the pies two days before Thanksgiving, so that they are fresh and ready to be eaten on Thanksgiving day. This year the goal was to make fifty to eighty pies. The apple and pumpkin pies are all donated to St. Vincent DePual for their Thanksgiving Feast.

“What we are doing benefits somebody and makes someone happy on Thanksgiving day. Somebody may not have anybody to share Thanksgiving with, and now they’ll be able to go to the soup kitchen and share it with 300 people,” explained Savage. 

Baking the pies are not only a fun activity to do with friends, but it also goes towards a good cause that helps feed and bring people together for Thanksgiving. 

Students, like Morgan Guimond, feel that helping out can make someone’s day and put a smile on his/her face. It  gives someone an indescribable feeling that people are willing to take time out of their day to help. In addition, giving to others can be beneficial to the individual volunteering.

“It makes me feel happy and included in the community,” says Guimond.

Thanksgiving is a time meant to be spent with loved ones and a day to be thankful for the people and things that we have. Being able to give back is one of the many ways to express how thankful we are.

Dedicating time to volunteering empowers other people to do so, as well. It causes a never ending rippling effect that will help make the world a better place. This allows us to be apart of something bigger than ourselves. 

“It’s very easy to give back to your community and to help those in need. I hear a lot of people say that they don’t have the money to help, and it really isn’t about money. It’s really about getting out there and helping. The supplies for this event were donated by numerous people. It’s really not costing the students anything to be here. It’s just their time,” said Savage.

Something that we often forget is that we are the people who are going to make change in our community. Whether that is small or big, it is still possible to make a difference.

“I also think it’s important to volunteer and be apart of our community so that we are able to make change. If we don’t do things in our community, if we don’t step up, then nobody will. I think it’s very important that we all work together to make sure that our community is as great as it can be,” said Savage.

Students and faculty members were able to successfully bake and donate pumpkin and apple pies to the Soup Kitchen, where it was enjoyed by 300 people during Thanksgiving.
