Norwich, Connecticut has elected Swarnjit Singh as its new mayor, marking a historic moment for the city and its local government. Singh’s election represents a shift in leadership in one of southeastern Connecticut’s oldest cities, known for its colonial history, waterfront, and diverse neighborhoods. Mayor Singh is not just the first Sikh mayor in Connecticut, but the entirety of New England. His election is a milestone for Sikh communities in Connecticut and the whole United States.
Some of Mayor Singh’s main goals include improving the local economy, attracting new businesses, and supporting development projects in the city, including renovating the Howard T. Brown waterfront area.
“I feel like we have everything in Norwich but something is missing,” says Singh. He has also spoken about the importance of housing, infrastructure, and making sure city services meet residents’ needs.
“I could see a lot of potential in this town and I feel like we are not using it,” says Singh. Singh also wants to make sure that people are comfortable in Norwich saying, “We need more people in politics who can bring people together.”
Enok Petit Homme, a friend of the mayor, says Singh is “Very compassionate and very respectful.” Having a compassionate and respectful mayor will help bring this community closer.
